HEGRA COLLECTIONS DEVELOPMENT

Hegra Archaeological Site (Al-Hijr), situated north of AlUla in Madain Saleh, is Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site. Alongside Petra in Jordan, it exemplifies Nabataean architectural genius through hundreds of sandstone-carved monumental tombs from the 1st century BCE to the 1st century CE. This ancient city reflects the vibrant caravan trade and cultural fusion of the era.

Recognising its significance, the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has engaged with Avesta Group to digitise its photographic archives of Hegra Archaeological Site. Avesta Group’s expertise in collection management has resulted in a comprehensive inventory in English and Arabic, enhancing the study of these exceptional tombs.
