ALULA OTTOMAN ARCHIVES PROJECT

The Hejaz railway, an integral part of AlUla’s cultural heritage, was built by the Ottoman authorities in the early 20th century to facilitate pilgrimages, connecting Damascus to Medina and Makkah. Thousands of people travelled its tracks, stopping at stations such as Mada’in Salih and AlUla as part of their spiritual quests. Recognizing its importance, the Royal Commission for AlUla acquired various Ottoman archive documents related to its administration.

Avesta Group, with its expertise in research, collection strategies, and management, undertook the translation of these documents from Ottoman into English and Arabic, thereby enriching the heritage collections and deepening understanding of the railway and the region’s history.
