Heydar Aliyev Centre

Baku, Azerbaijan

An architectural landmark of modern Baku and Azerbaijan

The construction of the Center was launched in 2007 and completed on May 10, 2012, to celebrate the late National Leader’s 89th anniversary. Recognized as one of the world’s masterpieces of architecture, the Heydar Aliyev Center has immediately grown into a signature architectural landmark of modern Baku. Zaha Hadid, the author of the building's design, is a worldwide recognized architect and the winner of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize.

The Heydar Aliyev Centre is not only Azerbaijan’s first cultural centre but, with its 50,000 sq.m it is also the largest centre of its kind in the Caucasus and Middle-Asian region.

A unique cultural complex

Named after its most famous statesman Heydar Aliyev, this world-class centre is a major venue for Azerbaijan and its capital, Baku.

The institution encompasses the following 3 sections:

1. The Heydar Aliyev Museum

2. The Exhibition Halls. This section occupies 9 floors with exhibition halls, administrative office, restaurant and a cafeteria.

3. The Auditorium. This section of 4 levels embraces 2 multifunctional conference halls, meeting rooms and the media center.

The Heydar Aliyev Centre fosters learning, inspiration and the exchange of ideas whilst respecting a common cultural heritage.

The centre is under the patronage of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

Based on the described objectives and expected impacts, public expectations and taking into account the specific context of creating a world class destination in Azerbaijan, Avesta developed a full masterplan for the Centre that included all museum planning aspects including strong operational, financial and institutional plans.

Avesta conceived the full project starting from the concept and positioning of the future institution, the branding strategy, the exhibitions development, public programmes strategies with a balanced mix of chargeable and free activities both indoors and outdoors, retail and rentals strategies and attached business plans together with recommendation of the functional and architectural planning of these specific spaces, operational and organizational models, etc.
