Avesta Group was tasked with redesigning the architecture of the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, France. Situated on Place de la République, the museum is the largest outside Paris, spanning 22,000 sqm. Established in 1801 as part of Napoleon I’s “popularization of art” initiative, it houses a vast collection showcasing European artistic movements from the 12th to the 20th century. Notable artists featured include Raphael, Rembrandt, Goya, and Rodin.
Originally built in the Belle-Époque style by Edouard Bérard and Fernand Etienne-Charles Delmas in 1892, the museum underwent a renovation in the 1990s led by architects Jean-Marc Ibos and Myrto Vitart, which included a new basement for temporary exhibitions and 19th-century sculptures. A must-visit attraction in Lille.
