In 1998, Avesta Group implemented its skills in cultural planning for the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire Romain Rolland in Clamecy, France.
Created in 1876, this institution acquired thanks to its director a great collection of fine arts, thus moving to different symbolic buildings of the city. The actual one gave its name to the museum: Romain Rolland was a writer and his house, as well as his grandfather's and an adjoining mansion house, are now hosting the entire collection. In 1996, a contemporary extension was designed to harmonise the entry and the façade of these three buildings. A wall of water welcomes the visitors and direct them to a redesigned entrance.
Indeed, the museum has known and is still knowing many extensions. In addition to the paintings, smart acquisitions and donations developed the collection: Gallo-Romans archaeological remains, regional earthenware from the 17th to the 20th, Charles Loupot’s works, Romain Rolland’s writings and possessions and also contemporary and modern works. To display and highlight the collections, new galleries and rooms were settled in 2003 and 2005, relying on new technologies and mediums, like in the impressive gallery dedicated to timber floating. Besides this permanent collection, many temporary exhibitions reflect the dynamism of the institution and reveal its attachment to its local and regional heritage.
