Riga, capital of Latvia, one of the oldest cities of the Baltic States recognized as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site for its medieval and Art Nouveau buildings, has decided to widen its cultural offer by adding a new national library and a Contemporary Art Museum.
Young States, today in the midst of a transition process, are inadequately represented in reviews of cultural history, and their contribution can hardly be adequately evaluated, let alone brought into the mainstream. The role of this museum is to transmit cultural knowledge at an international level, in order to fill these lacunae.
The future national contemporary art museum, primarily displaying Latvian contemporary artistic production, is to be located in the city’s first power plant with a readaptation by the world-famous architect Rem Koolhaas.
According to Rem Koolhaas, the use of the existing power plant (also for all the required technical and logistical services) allows this space to be evacuated of everything that would interfere with the relation between the viewer and the art object. In this sense this design accepts and accommodates the museum's new functions and roles, but also restores the museum's classical role: the organized contemplation of art.
