The Angers Museum of Fine Arts is situated in a mansion near the historic city of Angers. In 1801, the Museum opened its doors under the name of “Museum of the Ecole Centrale”, which was inspired on the Louvre Museum located in Paris, France. During the World War II the Museum was devastated, leading to a whole reorganization of the rooms and galleries.
The massive renovations happened from 1999 to 2004, under supervision of two architects – Gabor Mester de Parajd and Antoine Stinco –, whose goal was to harmonize all the existing facilities and building as well as create entirely new spaces.
The permanent collections of the Angers Museum of Fine Arts are separated into two tours. The “Fine Art Tour”, that exhibits chronologically different artistic movements from the 14th to the 20th century; this section includes the work of artist such as Segna di Bonaventura, Jeham Bellegambe and Benvenuto Tisi. The second tour is called “History of Angers” and shows the development of the city through archaeological artifacts, collections of the former Museum of Antiquities and excavations at Angers.
